On Friday we looked at Representation Theory and how it shapes our view of the world. We looked at ideas of masculinity and femininity with an activity where we discussed which toys are considered to be masculine or feminine. It used to be widely believed that dolls are for girls and toy cars are for boys, so what has changed? We had a lively debate on the issue of gender representation which provoked some excellent responses.
The class was a little too chatty at times which will need to stop before we carry on with your coursework project. Before our lesson next Tuesday 11th of September you must look at the question below and Why have our views of masculinity and femininity changed in recent years, what has affected how we think of men and women? Leave a comment below with your thoughts.

The suffegettes fought for women's rights to vote. Women now have the opportunity to earn more than men. Some women now do jobs that were considered to be male jobs. With more women having to work there has been a shift in roles (role reversal)

Our ideas of masculinity and femininity have changed over the years, I think this is partly because of advertising. For example with a toy the advert will show it as a girls toy when really it is unisex. But it would affect a boy if he had a Barnie because he could be called gay

The reason our ideas of masculinity and femininity have changed in recent years has changed is that things like toys are being aimed at specific sexes. So boys don't feel comfortable using female aimed toys around their friends and girls don't feel comfortable using boys toys around their friends but this effects boys more.

There are plenty of reasons why our ideas of masculinity and femininity, this could be down to how advertisement works nowadays, as many things that are considered advertised for men or women could be the complete opposite. Also I believe sport has something to do with it as well. For example, football is considered a man's game, yet plenty of women around the world play it.

the difference between masculinity and feminninity are that nowadays there are different types of adverts between each gender, for example football adverts for male and hair products for female

There are many reasons why we have different views of males and females, like sport is a very good example as we know that rugby would normally thought to be a mans sport but there is many woman that love to play rugby. We also have foot ball and it is the same again as we think that men would play football and not women but they do. This is moslty down to advertisement because when you see an advert on the Tv about a football match you dont see woman in the advert you only see men.

Our thoughts and idea's have changed on masculinity and femininity over the years because of the changing of equality, for example more women are working, higher paid jobs and moving higher up into the mans world, e.g.- mechanics, footballers and men are taking the roles we would think women would normally do, e.g- nurses, child care.

Our thoughts on masculinity and femininity have altered considerably over the last years. For example, it was unusual to see women promoting a career in the armed forces. There are now television and radio adverts where women tell of their involvement in the forces. Also it is very common now for the women to be the higher earners in the home and it is not now unusual for the man to stay at home and care for the children while the women goes out to work.

our views of masculinity and femininity changed in recent years because because of ADVERTISING... if you turn on your TV instantly you will see boys playing with toy cars, planes and action figures on the other hand girls playing with skipping ropes, barbie dolls, makeup. because ADVERTING has done this we automatically assume "that's a boys toy" "that's a girls toy"

Our ideas and thoughts on masculinity and femininity have changed over the years. I think one of the main reasons for this is because of advertising. If the package of a toy had an image of a boy on it you would assume that the toy is just for boys when it could be unisex but because of the image being a boy the a girl wouldn't what to buy it just incase they get bullied for having a boys toy.

over thoughts and views have changed on masculinity and femanity is what i think is mainly due to publishery, such as adverts. for example most barbie dolls are mainly to be aimed at females where as monster trucks etc are mainly aimed at males. but i would disagree with this as it is not due to which gender you are it is due to if you like the product produced. therefore this is a very sexual topic.

In Promoting things such as Children toys, for example if there was an advert for a Barbie doll it would have all girls in it and no boys even thoguh some boys will play with Barbies, and the same for toys like Cars that would mostly show boys even though girls can play will them

Males and females are constantly being separated by people's opinions of with what they deem as 'girl's toys' and boy's toys.' Honestly, there's no difference between the two, other than what people think. We're lead to believe that something exists only for a specific gender by the way it is presented to us.

Our views on masculinity and femininity have changed in recent years due to advertising in media. As in advertising toys that are aimed towards boys are more commonly accosiated with a typically masculine colour, such as blue or red . However toys that are aimed towards girls are more commonly associated with being pink and more feminine. This has effected our views on men and women as children now grow up thinking that; pink is a colour for girls and blue is a colour for boys. Also that stereo typically men are stronger and more athletic, while girls are weaker but stereo typically, more emotional.

Our beliefs on male and female toys and belongings have changed over the years because of advertising. For a boys toy usually you would see a boy on the tv advert or similarly on the box. Whereas nowadays you get a lot of unisex toys e.g. Lego. Some of these style of toys branch out to male or female because they offer a different subject. For Example: Lego released a Star Wars collection which is most likely aimed at boys. These are a few reasons as to why I think advertising has changed our perception of masculine and feminine toys.

People grow up with differant views on masculinity and femininity due to the way they are brought up. This is because for example Girls have more of an interest of the barbie sort of toy witch is calm and relaxed and allows thm to use there imagination, on the other hand boys normally go for the action fighting sort of toy. The advertisments on the tele to advertise these toys because they have the gender the toy is aimed at, who is playing with the toy on the tele.

Our Views of masculinity and femenity have changed a lot due to avdervtising. As in advrtising toys to young girls, there colours are pink, purple and being aimed towards girls more than boys. Boys on the other hand they are more nto different stuff and there perfered colour is blue,red,green... pink if more for girls because its a girly colour and blue, red, green is for the boys, but most boys are into excersize and playing sport while girls are more into shopping and all that stuff.

In recent years, our views on masculinity and feminist jobs/objects has developed massively. Around a hundred years ago, women were thought to be the ones to look after the baby, stay at home, and be taken care of by the men, who would go out to work in such jobs as building work and army jobs. Even in the world wars, the opinion on masculine and feminine rolls were challenged. In the first world war, women worked as nurses (thus impacting the opinion today that being a nurse is a more feminine job). By world war two, women had taken up most male jobs due to the first war. Men had gone out to fight so they had to run the mines and the restaurants etc. Women had gone from entertaining and looking after soldiers to being resistant to the nazis. Over recent years, Advertising has slowly convinced the public that roles have been reversed. Men are seen washing up to advertise washing up liquid, women are seen advertising joining the army. We still have a basic attitude of what masculine and feminism is, such as colours and hobbies have been stereotyped. (pink is for girls, blue is for boys, boys play rugby, girls do dancing)
