Today we analysed some film posters using our new knowledge of semiology (the study of signs). Some good ideas were offered and it seems that the class are getting to grips with these new theories. As your coursework production will be generating a CD cover for an artist of your invention, we need to apply these theories to CD cover artwork. Below are three CD covers, take time to analyse them and identify the semiology used to compose the images, you should now be able to identify all three types of sign with good reasoning. For extra analysis you could now include thoughts on representation Write your responses in a word document or powerpoint and submit digitally through the 'ASSIGNMENT SUBMISSION' area on the home page. This is due in by Monday 17th September.

Today we looked at signs in media. You had a try at identifying the Sign = Signifier/Signified for a sign of your choice and identify the correct elements. To see if you grasped the concept I'd like you to try again. As a reminder here is one suggestion taken in class. Have a try at detailing a new Sign = Signifier/Signified and leave it below.
On Friday we looked at Representation Theory and how it shapes our view of the world. We looked at ideas of masculinity and femininity with an activity where we discussed which toys are considered to be masculine or feminine. It used to be widely believed that dolls are for girls and toy cars are for boys, so what has changed? We had a lively debate on the issue of gender representation which provoked some excellent responses.
The class was a little too chatty at times which will need to stop before we carry on with your coursework project. Before our lesson next Tuesday 11th of September you must look at the question below and Why have our views of masculinity and femininity changed in recent years, what has affected how we think of men and women? Leave a comment below with your thoughts. |
